Our Story
Founded in 1929, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has woven an impactful history that spans nearly a century, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of Hispanic civil rights in the United States. Born during a period marked by pervasive discrimination and limited opportunities for Hispanic Americans, LULAC emerged as a beacon of advocacy and empowerment. Visionary leaders such as Alonso S. Perales and Dr. Hector P. Garcia spearheaded the organization's mission to address systemic inequalities, fight for equal educational opportunities, and challenge discriminatory practices.
From the Zoot Suit Riots of the 1940s to pivotal legal victories like Hernandez v. Texas in 1954, LULAC has been a steadfast force in dismantling barriers and promoting social, economic, and educational advancement. Through the Civil Rights Era, expansion into educational initiatives, and ongoing advocacy in the modern era, LULAC's history is a testament to its commitment to justice, equality, and the well-being of the Hispanic community in the United States.
