Virginia LULAC is proud to spotlight one of our members, Douglas Mejia, who is running for a seat on the Herndon Town Council in the November election.

Born and raised in Herndon, Virginia, Douglas is the bilingual son of immigrant parents whose upbringing instilled in him a deep appreciation for community service, compassion, and civic engagement. From a young age, he recognized the importance of giving back and has spent much of his life serving others.

Douglas began his journey of service through his local church, where he volunteered by managing audiovisual equipment and supporting the technology needed for weekly services. While pursuing his education, he also shared his passion for technology by teaching at a private school in Vienna, Virginia.

A graduate of Marymount University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Douglas now serves his community as a registered nurse, caring for patients from all backgrounds with the same compassion and dedication that has defined his life of service.

Beyond the hospital, Douglas is passionate about mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals. He volunteers his time visiting local schools to introduce students to careers in healthcare, sharing his experiences as a bilingual nurse and encouraging young people to pursue their dreams. During community outreach events, he also helps conduct wellness screenings, including blood pressure checks and other basic health assessments, while educating community members about the importance of preventive healthcare. On World Health Day, Douglas visited students at George Washington Middle School, where he spoke about his nursing career and inspired future healthcare leaders. He later reflected that mentoring helps students realize they are capable of accomplishing far more than they may imagine, a message that continues to guide his commitment to service.

His commitment to helping others extends well beyond his professional career. As a member of Virginia LULAC, Douglas has consistently volunteered his time to support our mission of advancing the Latino community throughout the Commonwealth. He has been an active participant in community outreach efforts, including Virginia LULAC's annual Dreamers Mothers in Action Toy Drive, where he helped raise awareness, collect donations, and volunteer to bring joy to children and families during the holiday season. His willingness to serve wherever needed has made him an invaluable member of our organization.

Today, Douglas is seeking to continue that service through public office by running for the Herndon Town Council.

According to Douglas, his decision to run stems from a desire to ensure that every resident has a voice in local government. As a lifelong Herndon resident, he believes the town's leadership should be more connected to the diverse community it serves. His campaign focuses on connecting residents with local resources, expanding opportunities for families, supporting small businesses, and addressing affordability so that more people can continue to call Herndon home. He has also emphasized the importance of proactive community engagement by meeting residents where they are—in neighborhoods, churches, community organizations, and local gathering places—rather than expecting them to come to government. Douglas's story reflects the very values Virginia LULAC strives to cultivate: leadership through service, compassion for others, and a commitment to strengthening our communities. Whether serving patients in the hospital, volunteering with community organizations, or seeking elected office, he has demonstrated a lifelong dedication to improving the lives of those around him.

Virginia LULAC congratulates Douglas Mejia on his candidacy and thanks him for his continued commitment to public service. We wish him the very best as he continues his campaign and remains dedicated to serving the residents of Herndon.
