Virginia LULAC Stands With Colombia Following Devastating Earthquake

Virginia LULAC is heartbroken by the devastating earthquake that struck Colombia and the tremendous loss of life, injuries, displacement and destruction it has caused. Our hearts are with the people of Colombia, the families who have lost loved ones, those still searching for family members and friends, and every community now facing the difficult road toward recovery.
On August 10, 2026, a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, with its epicenter near San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó. The earthquake caused catastrophic damage across western and central Colombia, including Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Quindío and Caldas.
As rescue, humanitarian and recovery efforts continue, Colombian authorities have reported 289 lives lost, 4,187 people injured, 143 people still missing and more than 186,000 people affected. Nearly 27,000 homes have been destroyed, while more than 127,000 additional homes have been damaged. Behind every one of these numbers is a person, a family and a community whose life has been changed. The scale of this tragedy is immense, and rebuilding the communities devastated by this earthquake will take months and years.
Virginia Stands With Colombia
Virginia LULAC is especially grateful to the members of Virginia Task Force 1, based in Fairfax County, who deployed to Colombia following the earthquake as part of a disaster coordination and structural engineering assessment mission.
These highly trained Virginians brought their expertise in disaster response and structural engineering to support Colombia during an extraordinary moment of need. Their willingness to leave their families and communities to assist people thousands of miles away represents the very best of our Commonwealth and our shared responsibility to help one another in times of crisis.

Catholic Relief Services is working with Caritas Colombia and its nationwide network to reach communities affected by the earthquake. Donations are supporting immediate needs including safe shelter, food, clean water, protection and emergency assistance for families.
Colombian Red Cross and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies:
The Colombian Red Cross has mobilized emergency personnel and specialized teams throughout affected areas. Its response includes search and rescue, emergency health services, humanitarian assistance, family reunification services and support for communities affected by the disaster.

Project HOPE:
Project HOPE is responding directly to humanitarian and health needs following the earthquake. Its teams are providing hygiene supplies, dignity items and cleaning materials, while assessing damaged health facilities and identifying urgent health needs in affected communities.

UNICEF is scaling up its response for children and families, particularly in Chocó and Buenaventura. Its work includes helping restore access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene services, protecting children and supporting families whose homes, schools and essential services have been disrupted.

World Central Kitchen:
World Central Kitchen teams are on the ground in Colombia providing fresh meals to families, first responders and communities affected by the earthquake. Its teams began responding immediately following the disaster and continue working with local partners to reach communities in need.
